Hi there, I am looking to buy my first english saddle, but do not know how to measure for the tree width. I need to know where to measure on the horse and where to measure on the saddle. Also, how do I know that the measurement of the saddle will fit with the measurement of my horse? Thanks!

The best thing for you to do is contact you closest tack store that specializes in english tack. They will tell you how to get a ‘sketch’ of the horses back. With this, you can get the proper width. After that, I would look for a tack store that allows you to test ride the saddles. Just because you get an english saddle that fits your horse doesn’t mean it will fit you. Also, you get what you pay for. Expect to pay around $1000 new for a good saddle. What I would do is test ride the saddles, find a size for you and a size for your horse that you like and then get on ebay or any other search engine and see if you can find a used saddle. Here you can find a moderately priced, really good english saddle.
